MOSH / MOAH in palm oil (P1917-MRT)

The correct determination of MOSH and MOAH in matrices with high fat/oil content and high amounts of interfering biogenic substances remains challenging. Suitable sample pre-treatment and clean-up steps (e.g. saponification, epoxidation) must be applied in order to achieve correct results.

If sample pre-treatment and clean-up are not performed properly, the interpretation of the chromatograms might be difficult. As a consequence, false positive results might be reported related to MOSH and MOAH in matrices like palm oil.

The aim of the method ring test P1917-MRT is

  • to quantify MOSH and MOAH in palm oil samples,
  • to verify the correct application of suitable clean-up techniques, and
  • to validate the results with appropriate mass spectrometric methods. Marker substances like e.g. hopanes are to be identified that can be used to confirm the fossil origin of the MOH in order to avoid false positive results.

Two test materials are provided:

  • Two different samples of palm oil (50 ml each).
  • The palm oil samples are spiked with different types and levels of mineral oil.

The corresponding untreated palm oil samples (two different samples, 50 ml each) are provided as blank material upon request.

The results are evaluated with respect to

  • the comparability criterion (z-score)
  • the trueness criterion (recovery of the spiked level, as far as scientific reasonable)


And beyond the pure statistical evaluation? 

P1917-MRT is a method ring test. That means, the evaluation is not limited to the pure statistical evaluation of the provided data. We will have a closer look at the small but important details, which may highly influence the results as well as the interpretation of the results. 

For that purpose,

  • all participants are asked to provide the chromatograms of both test samples and blank samples including the integration of the humps. All chromatograms are published (anonymised with the lab code) in the final report.
  • questionnaire is provided related to the analytical details like internal standards, sample-pretreatment, etc. and related to the confirmation of the results.

The analytical details, which are mentioned above are summarised in a separate part of the final report. For reasons of fairness, only those participants, which provide details and chromatograms will receive the second part of the report. These data, anonymised and summarised, will help to identify shortcomings, built the basis for further discussion and thus help to enhance the quality of the applied methods.

The participation fee is 900 EUR. The two blank materials are available at a price of 70 EUR each upon request.
