Quaternary Ammonium Compounds in lettuce and cream cheese (P1306-RT)

Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) are quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) which may be included in biocides for disinfection and plant protection products.

According to the EFSA evaluation of monitoring data (November 2012 to April 2013) on QAC in food the highest frequency of detection was reported for leaf vegetables & fresh herbs and milk & milk products.

As a consequence, PROOF-ACS organised and performed a ring test on QAC in lettuce and cream cheese in November 2013.
QACs of interest were BAC C-12, BAC C-14, BAC C-16 and DDAC C-10.

The ring test offered two test materials (min 180 g each):

  • spiked lettuce homogenate,
  • spiked cream cheese

Blank material for lettuce homogenate and cream cheese (180 g each) was available upon request.

The time schedule of the ring test was:

  • Dispatch of samples:                                     25 November 2013
  • Sample reception (in the laboratory):      26/27 November 2013
  • Deadline for results reporting:                        11 December 2013

Each participant was given a report after the evaluation of the analytical results. This report includes the anonymous results of all participants and the statistical evaluation of the results.

Participation fee:
790 EUR for the participation in the ring test
70 EUR for the blank material cream cheese (by choice)
70 EUR for the blank material lettuce (by choice)

Registration deadline was 6 November 2013.
